The island is flat, distances are short and the roads around the tourist zone are good, so for a stay on Djerba a small car is more than enough. Driving on the island: roads, the Roman causeway, the Ajim ferry
Djerba is an easy island to drive. The main roads link Houmt Souk, Midoun, the tourist zone and the airport; the rest of the island unfolds along small lanes between palm groves, traditional menzel farmsteads and villages such as Erriadh and Guellala. Slow down near the villages: bicycles, scooters and carts share the road, and roundabouts are frequent.
There are two links to the mainland. To the south-east, the Roman causeway at El Kantara connects the island to Zarzis and the Médenine road by land. To the west, the Ajim ferry crosses to Jorf, towards Gabès and Matmata; crossings depend on the season and how busy it is, so check locally. VIPCAR cars may use both. Keep the included 300 km per day in mind: it accumulates over the whole rental, which is plenty for a full loop of the island and a trip to the mainland.
Day trips from Djerba: Zarzis, Tataouine, Matmata, Ksar Ghilane
From Djerba, southern Tunisia is a day trip away. Zarzis and its beaches over the Roman causeway; Tataouine and the hilltop ksour of Chenini and Douiret, Berber villages clinging to the mountainside; Matmata and its troglodyte houses, via the Ajim ferry or through Médenine. On these tarmac roads a saloon or compact SUV will do, but a RAV4 or a Prado makes the journey more comfortable.
Ksar Ghilane, the oasis at the edge of the Grand Erg, has to be earned: the last stretch runs over sand tracks, and a proper 4x4 such as the Land Cruiser Prado is recommended. Declare any off-tarmac driving when you book; it is the rule for all our SUVs and lets us give you the right vehicle and agree the conditions. Fill the tank before leaving the island and carry water.
