Ten car rental pitfalls to check before you book in Tunisia — no-deposit offers, counter insurance, fuel tricks, undocumented damage, vague one-way terms — and what a reliable agency does instead.
Car rental scams in Tunisia are rarely dramatic. Most of the money you lose is lost quietly: an insurance package you did not need, a “free” airport pick-up that turns into a fee, a fuel level nobody recorded, a deposit that takes weeks to come back. None of this is specific to Tunisia — it happens in every rental market — but when you book from abroad, in a currency you do not use every day, the small print is easier to miss.
This guide lists the 10 pitfalls we see most often, how to spot each one before you pay, and what VIPCAR does instead, so that reliable car rental in Tunisia becomes a matter of checking rather than luck. We have been renting cars from Tunis since 2001; the checks below are the ones we would run on ourselves. For rates by category, read our guide to car rental prices in Tunisia alongside this one.
Pitfall 1: the “no deposit” illusion
Some listings advertise car rental with no deposit. In practice a deposit always exists somewhere: it is built into a higher daily rate, it is held silently as a block on your card at the counter, or it is replaced by a large excess you only discover when something goes wrong. A company that hands you a car worth tens of thousands of dinars with no guarantee at all is either hiding the guarantee or hiding the risk. How to spot it:
What VIPCAR does instead: a refundable security deposit by category — 1,500–3,000 TND for economy cars, 5,000 TND for standard cars and 6,000–8,000 TND for luxury cars — is stated before you book and shown on each car page. It is your maximum liability: whatever happens, nothing is charged beyond it, and it is returned in full when the car comes back in good condition.
- The words “no deposit” appear in the advert but nowhere in the contract
- No deposit amount is written anywhere before you pay
- A “damage excess” is mentioned instead, with no ceiling on what you could owe
- The daily rate is noticeably higher than comparable cars in the same category
Pitfall 3: insurance upsell at the counter
You booked online at a price you liked. At pick-up, the agent explains that the included cover leaves you exposed to a large excess and offers a collision damage waiver, then a super-waiver on top, then tyre and glass cover. You are tired, the car is waiting, and you sign. The daily price you compared online was never the price you were going to pay. The signs are visible on the booking page, long before the counter:
What VIPCAR does instead: basic third-party insurance is included in every rental and we do not sell extra insurance packages. The refundable deposit replaces them: it is your maximum liability, in one clear number, known before you travel. There is nothing to add at handover because there is nothing to sell.
- The listing shows a price and a separate “insurance from” line
- Cover is described with acronyms (CDW, SCDW, PAI) but no plain statement of your liability
- The agent cannot tell you, in one number, the most you could lose
- The “basic” cover has an excess higher than the deposit you were quoted
Pitfall 4: “unlimited kilometres” with fine print
“Unlimited mileage” is an attractive headline. Read on and you may find a daily cap in the terms, a per-kilometre fee above it, or an exclusion for “long-distance use” that is never defined. The word unlimited then means unlimited until the return, when the odometer is read and the invoice grows. A stated allowance you can plan around is worth more than a promise you cannot verify. Look for:
What VIPCAR does instead: 300 km per day are included and stated in the rental, which covers day trips from Tunis, Hammamet or Djerba. If your route is longer — a tour of the south, for example — tell us in advance and the formula is confirmed at booking, in writing. The odometer reading is noted at handover and again at return, with you.
- “Unlimited” in the headline, a kilometre figure somewhere in the terms
- A per-kilometre fee is listed but the included allowance is not
- The odometer reading is not written on the contract at pick-up
- “Local use only” or “no long-distance travel” without a definition
Pitfall 5: fuel tricks
Fuel is the easiest place to lose a few dozen dinars without noticing, and it comes in three versions. A “full-to-empty” prepaid tank, billed above pump price, with no refund for what you do not use. A refuelling service fee if you return below the delivered level, again well above pump price. And the simplest one: a fuel level nobody wrote down, so the disagreement at return is your word against theirs. Watch for:
What VIPCAR does instead: full-to-full. The car is delivered with a given fuel level, it is noted on the handover sheet in front of you, and you return it at the same level. There is no fuel package to buy and nothing to pay if the level matches.
- A “prepaid fuel” or “fuel package” option is pre-ticked at checkout
- The fuel level is not on the check-out sheet you sign
- The refuelling charge per litre is not stated anywhere
- The car is delivered with a quarter tank and no explanation
Pitfall 6: pre-existing damage not documented
The most expensive pitfall is also the most common: you drive off with a scratched bumper that was already there, and at return it is charged to you. Without a signed damage sheet and dated photos, you cannot prove the scratch was old. This is not usually fraud — it is a rushed handover in a car park — but it costs the customer either way. Ten minutes at pick-up protect your whole deposit:
What VIPCAR does instead: a written check-in with our agent, every existing mark recorded on the sheet, photos taken on both sides, and the same protocol at return. Your deposit is only touched for damage that was not on the sheet, and never beyond the deposit itself.
- Walk around the car and film it slowly, in daylight if possible: bumpers, wheel rims, windscreen, roof, mirrors
- Ask that every mark be drawn on the check-out sheet before you sign
- Check tyres, spare wheel, jack, lights, wipers and the warning triangle
- Photograph the odometer and the fuel gauge together
- Repeat the whole routine at return, with the agent present, and keep a copy of the sheet
Pitfall 7: deposit held on card vs cash
How the deposit is taken matters as much as the amount. A card pre-authorisation is a temporary block, not a charge: it is released after return, and how fast it disappears from your statement depends on your bank, not on the rental company — several business days is normal, so do not travel with a card that has no headroom. A cash deposit is simpler but leaves no trace unless you get a signed receipt with the amount, the date and the car's plate number. Before you leave home:
What VIPCAR does instead: the deposit is held on a credit or debit card — both are accepted — and refunded in full if the car comes back in good condition. If you would rather leave a cash deposit, ask at booking and we confirm the procedure in writing, receipt included. Our deposit policy page sets out the tiers and the release rules.
- Ask whether the deposit is a pre-authorisation or an actual charge
- Ask which cards are accepted before you travel, not at the counter
- If you pay cash, insist on a signed receipt and photograph it
- Keep the return check-out sheet: it is your proof the car came back in good condition
Pitfall 8: “from €X” prices that exclude everything
A “from” price is a marketing floor, not a quote. It usually corresponds to the smallest car, in low season, for a long rental, with nothing included. Once you add the dates you actually want, the category you actually need, insurance, airport pick-up, a second driver and card fees, the total can be far from the headline. The problem is not the number; it is comparing one company's floor to another company's full price. Signs to watch:
What VIPCAR does instead: a fixed written quote on WhatsApp, with every item named — car, dates, delivery point, extras you asked for, one-way fee if any. Rates are shown per car in TND with a EUR conversion, and the amount confirmed is the amount you pay. Our guide to car rental prices in Tunisia explains how the 1-, 4-, 7- and 30-day tiers work.
- The final total is only shown after you enter card details
- Extras have no prices on the booking page
- The currency changes between the advert and the checkout
- Card or “processing” fees appear at the last step
Pitfall 9: fake or untraceable online agencies
It happens in every market: a polished website, attractive photos, an urgent “only two cars left”, a request for a large advance payment — and no agency behind it, or a broker who resells your booking to whoever has a car free that day. The signs are always the same and they take one minute to check. A reliable car rental company in Tunisia can be found on a map and answers the phone:
What VIPCAR does instead: three physical offices — the head office at Rue de la Feuille d'Érable, Lac 2, 1053 Tunis, an agency in Gabès and a desk at Djerba-Zarzis airport — a fleet of 250+ vehicles, and a company founded in 2001. Our number, +216 55 771 077, is answered 24/7 on WhatsApp and by phone; email is info@vipcar.com.tn. Our Google Business Profile carries the same address and a map pin.
- A physical address you can find on a map, and a map pin on a Google Business Profile
- A phone number that answers — ideally on WhatsApp, with a human reply, not a bot
- Reviews spread over years, not all posted in the same month
- A written confirmation naming the car category, dates, price and deposit
- A small reservation deposit to confirm, never full payment months ahead
- A company name and founding year, not only a brand and a logo
Pitfall 10: vague cancellation and one-way terms
Plans change: a flight moves, a hotel is switched, you decide to fly home from Djerba instead of driving back to Tunis. Two clauses decide what that costs you. A cancellation policy that only says “fees may apply” means you will find out after the fact. A one-way policy that is not mentioned at all means the return fee is set at the counter, when you have no alternative. Check that the terms answer these:
What VIPCAR does instead: cancellation and modification are free up to 24 hours before pick-up; inside 24 hours the reservation deposit is not refunded; refunds are processed within 5–7 business days. The reservation deposit is 10% for standard cars and 20% for luxury cars, and only for bookings made more than 7 days ahead. One-way rentals between Tunis, Djerba and Gabès cost €70–€100 depending on the route, stated at booking. All of it is on our cancellation policy page.
- Is there a cancellation deadline in hours or days?
- Is the reservation deposit refundable, and until when?
- How long do refunds take?
- Is a one-way return possible, and at what stated fee?
A 60-second checklist before you book
Before you pay anything, run through these eight checks. If an agency cannot answer one of them in writing, that is your answer. They apply to any company, anywhere — VIPCAR included — and they take less time than reading a single review. For the wider picture on documents, driving rules and itineraries, our complete car rental in Tunisia guide covers the rest.
- Deposit: amount by category, how it is held, when it is released
- Insurance: what is included, and the single number that is your maximum liability
- Mileage: the daily allowance in kilometres and the fee above it
- Fuel: full-to-full, with the level written on the handover sheet
- Delivery: pick-up point named; airport and out-of-hours fees stated or excluded
- Total price: every item named, in one currency, before you enter card details
- Agency: address on a map, a phone that answers, reviews spread over time
- Terms: cancellation deadline, refund timing, one-way fee

Frequently asked questions
Is “no deposit” car rental in Tunisia real?+
No. A deposit always applies somewhere — in a higher daily rate, a silent card block at the counter or a large excess. At VIPCAR the refundable deposit is stated by category: 1,500–3,000 TND economy, 5,000 TND standard, 6,000–8,000 TND luxury. It is your maximum liability and is returned in full when the car comes back in good condition.
How do I know a car rental agency in Tunisia is reliable?+
Check five things: a physical address you can find on a map, a phone or WhatsApp number that answers, reviews spread over years, a written confirmation naming car, dates, price and deposit, and a small reservation deposit rather than full payment upfront. VIPCAR has three offices — Tunis Lac 2, Gabès and Djerba airport — a 250+ vehicle fleet and has operated since 2001.
Should I buy extra insurance at the counter?+
Ask first for the single number that is the most you could lose. If nobody can give it, the extra cover is priced on fear. At VIPCAR, basic third-party insurance is included and we do not sell extra insurance packages: the refundable security deposit is your maximum liability, so there is nothing to add at handover.
What should I do if I find damage at pick-up?+
Do not drive off until it is written on the check-out sheet and photographed with the date visible. Film a slow walk-around of the car, including rims, windscreen and roof, and photograph the odometer and fuel gauge. At VIPCAR the check-in is written with our agent, every mark recorded and photographed, and the same protocol is repeated at return.
Is airport pick-up really free?+
At VIPCAR, yes: delivery and collection at Tunis-Carthage (TUN), Djerba-Zarzis (DJE) and Enfidha-Hammamet (NBE) are free, 24/7, night arrivals included. Elsewhere, look for “airport fee”, “location surcharge” or “out-of-hours” in the terms — if they exist, ask for them to be added to the written quote before you confirm.
Can I pay the security deposit with a debit card?+
Yes. At VIPCAR the deposit is held on a credit or debit card — both are accepted — and refunded in full when the car comes back in good condition. How quickly the block disappears from your statement depends on your bank. If you prefer a cash deposit, ask at booking and we confirm the procedure in writing with a receipt.
What happens if my plans change after booking?+
Cancellation and modification are free up to 24 hours before pick-up. Within 24 hours, fees apply as per our Cancellation Policy and the reservation deposit is not refunded. Refunds are processed within 5–7 business days. Switching to a one-way return between Tunis, Djerba and Gabès is possible for a €70–€100 fee depending on the route, confirmed at booking.
What mileage allowance is normal for a rental in Tunisia?+
A stated daily allowance you can plan around is better than an “unlimited” headline with a cap in the terms. VIPCAR includes 300 km per day in every rental — enough for day trips from Tunis, Hammamet or Djerba. Planning a longer itinerary, such as a tour of the south?
