Renting a car in Tunisia is the simplest way to see the country on your own terms: the medinas and museums of Tunis, the beaches of Hammamet and Djerba, the Roman sites of the interior and the gateways to the desert in the south. Tunisia has louages (shared minibuses), trains and taxis, and they work well between big towns. What they do not give you is the freedom to stop at a Roman site on the way, leave Hammamet before the beach fills up, or reach a village that no louage serves. With your own car, Tunis to Hammamet is a short morning drive, Tunis to Kairouan a comfortable half day, and Tunis to Djerba a full day on the motorway and national roads, with as many stops as you like.

Renting a car in Tunisia is not the right choice for everyone. If you are staying three days in central Tunis, parking and city traffic will cost you more time than they save; an airport transfer and a private chauffeur for a day trip will serve you better. If your plan includes the coast, the interior or the south, or you travel as a family with luggage, self-drive is usually the better value.

The requirements to rent a car in Tunisia are simple and the same for every visitor. Bring the documents below to the handover and the contract is signed in a few minutes. Most visitors from Europe, North America and the Gulf drive on their national licence; an International Driving Permit is a translation, not a replacement, so carry it together with the original.

No young-driver surcharge is published at VIPCAR; if you are between 21 and 25, tell us at booking and any condition is confirmed in your quote. The bank card is used for the security deposit only, and a debit card is accepted as well as a credit card.

Car rental prices in Tunisia are set per car, per day, and depend on three things: the category, the length of the rental and the season. Categories run from economy city cars to compact and saloon models, SUVs, vans and luxury saloons. Each car has a headline daily rate and a minimum rental length of a few days, shown on its page, and most cars carry a lower rate from 7 days and again from 30 days: the longer you keep the car, the less each day costs.

To give you a scale, three indicative rates read from the same fleet data as our car pages: Kia Picanto from 95 TND/day, minimum 3 days; Volkswagen Golf 8 from 190 TND/day, minimum 3 days; Mercedes-Benz E-Class from 850 TND/day, minimum 3 days. Seasonal rates apply in summer and around holidays and override the standard tiers, so book early for July, August and the end of the year. Every rental in Tunisia carries a refundable security deposit, and any offer that claims otherwise is hiding it somewhere else. At VIPCAR the deposit depends on the category: 1,500–3,000 TND for economy cars, 5,000 TND for standard cars and 6,000–8,000 TND for luxury cars. The exact amount is shown on each car page before you book. It is held on your credit or debit card for the duration of the rental and returned in full when the car comes back in good condition.

The deposit is also your maximum liability. Basic third-party insurance is included in every rental, and we do not sell CDW or extra insurance packages at the counter: the deposit model replaces them. Whatever happens during the rental, nothing is charged beyond the deposit. The rate you see on the car page is a complete daily price, not a base to which fees are added at the counter. Anything not on this list, such as a child seat, an additional driver, GPS or a Wi-Fi hotspot, is available on request and priced in your written quote, so there is nothing to discover at pick-up.

The handover itself is part of what you pay for. Our agent walks around the car with you, notes every existing mark on the check-in sheet, records the fuel level and the mileage, and you sign one copy each. Take your own photos at the same time; they take two minutes and settle any question at return. The same check is repeated when you bring the car back, and the deposit is released on that basis.

Returning the car works the same way in reverse: agree the time and place in the quote, allow a margin before a flight, and our agent meets you at the airport kerb or at your hotel, checks the car with you and closes the contract. Early-morning and late-night returns at the three airports are handled 24/7; tell us your departure flight number and we plan around it.

Traffic drives on the right. The commonly published limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on open roads and 110 km/h on motorways; seatbelts are required front and rear, hand-held phones are not allowed, and for alcohol treat the limit as zero in practice. Police checkpoints on main roads are routine: slow down, lower the window and have your licence, passport and rental contract ready. Check current rules before you travel.

The motorways between Tunis, Hammamet and Sfax are good and tolled, so keep small cash. Fuel is easy to find on main roads and sparser in the south: fill up before Gabès and Matmata. Keep the contract and the vehicle papers in the car, photograph where you park, and avoid remote roads after dark. From Tunis, the classic loop is Carthage and Sidi Bou Saïd in the morning, La Marsa for lunch, then the coast road to Hammamet and, if you have a second day, the Cap Bon peninsula with Nabeul, Kélibia and El Haouaria. On Djerba, collect the car at the airport office and circle the island: Houmt Souk and its market, the Sidi Mahrez and Aghir beaches, Midoun, the pottery village of Guellala, then the causeway to Zarzis on the mainland. From Gabès, head inland to the troglodyte houses of Matmata, on to Tataouine and the ksour, and toward the desert gateways of Douz and Ksar Ghilane. The paved roads are fine for any car; for sand tracks take a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado or a Toyota Hilux 4x4 and ask for local advice. For families and groups, the question is luggage as much as seats. The Peugeot Traveller and the Mercedes-Benz V-Class carry seven to nine people with their luggage; seats, gearbox and minimum rental length are shown on each car page. Child seats are available on request: give us the children's ages at booking and they are fitted before delivery.
